Loading Pa500’s Operating System and Musical Resources
Introduction

Korg regularly releases new updates of the Pa500’s Operating
System and Musical Resources. The most up-to-date versions
can be downloaded from our web site (www.korgpa.com).
Note: By loading the new Operating System and Musical
Resources, you also load all the features added with all the previous
updates.

Two different types of system files: the
.PKG and .BKP

Updates are supplied by Korg in two file formats:
• “.PKG” files contain the Operating System. These files can
only be made by Korg. To load them, use the “Loading a
.PKG file” procedure described below.
• “.BKP” files are backups of the Musical Resources as a
whole. These can be created by Korg or the user, by way of
the Media > Utility > Full Resource Backup command. To
load them, use the “Loading a .BKP file” procedure
described below.

The supplied .PKG file

The available Operating System file is contained into the
“Pa500_os_v[nnn].zip” file (where [nnn] is the version number).
After unzipping it, you obtain the following system file:
Pa500All.pkg. This is the Operating System. Loading this file will
not modify your User data. Just load it, by following the procedure
described below.

The supplied .BKP file

The available Musical Resource files are contained into the
“Pa500_res_v[nnn].zip” file (where [nnn] is the version number).
After unzipping it, you obtain the following resource file:
Pa500_res_v[nnn].bkp. These are all the Musical Resources,
including all Sounds, Performances, Styles, Pads, STSs, Song-
Book, and Global data.
This is equivalent to the file you can create with the Media >
Utility > Full Resource Backup command. To load it, use the
“Loading a .BKP file” procedure described below.
Warning: Loading this file will delete your User data, so we suggest
you back-up your older data before upgrading. See “Backing-up
your older data” below.

Backing-up your older data

Before loading new Musical Resources, you should backup your
older data. Loading the new Musical Resources will completely
erase the Factory and User area.
Backing-up data is not needed when loading just the Operating
System, since this operation doesn’t overwrite the Musical
Resources.
There are three options to back-up your data. Options (a) and
(b) will allow you to recover individual data (single items or
banks) later, while option (c) will only allow you to restore the
saved data as a whole.
a) Use the Media > Save > All procedure to save all the User
data (Style, Pad, Performance, Sound/DK, SongBook, Global).
b) If you customized the Factory data area (by rearranging or
replacing Styles or Pads), go to Media > Preferences, and
uncheck the “Factory Style and Pad Protect” parameter.
Then individually save any customized file or bank into a
new “.SET” folder.
c) If you want to save all the Factory and User data in a single
operation, use the Media > Utility > Full Resource Backup
command. Please be advised that you will not be able to
load single files or banks from the resulting backup (.BKP)
file.

Loading a .PKG file

The following procedure allows you to load the Operating System.
1. Unzip the “Pa500_os_v[nnn].zip” file, to obtain the
“Pa500All.pkg” system file.
2. Copy the file “Pa500All.pkg” to the root of an SD card.
As an alternative, you can copy the file to the root of an SD
card inserted into the internal SD drive of the Pa500, by
using the USB port to connect your Pa500 to a personal
computer.
3. Turn the Pa500 off, and insert the SD card into the SD drive
of the Pa500.
4. Turn the Pa500 on, while keeping the INTRO 1 button
pressed.
5. The file begins to be loaded, and the “Loading package…”
message appears on the display. After some seconds, a
progress bar will show the loading advancement:
Warning: Do not power the instrument off, or remove the
SD card , while this procedure is running!

6. At the end of the procedure, a message asks you to restart
the instrument:

7. Turn the instrument off, then on again.

Loading a .BKP file
To load a “.BKP” file, use the Media > Utility > Full Restore
Resources command.
Warning: Don’t play the keyboard while restoring data, and stay in
the Media mode. Wait until the “Wait” message disappears.
Warning: Loading this file will delete your User data, so we suggest
you back-up your older data before upgrading. See “Backing-up
your older data” above.
1. Unzip the “Pa500_res_v[nnn].zip” file, to obtain the
“Pa500_res_v[nnn].bkp” resource file.
2. Copy the file “Pa500_res_v[nnn].bkp” to an SD card.
As an alternative, you can copy the file to an SD card
inserted into the internal SD drive of the Pa500, by using
the USB port to connect your Pa500 to a personal computer.
3. Insert the SD card into the SD drive of the Pa500.
4. In the Media > Utility page, select the Full Restore
Resources command, then press Execute. The source device
appears.
5. Browse through the files to find the backup file.
6. When the backup file (“.BKP” file) is in the display, select it
and press the Restore command.
7. When done, turn the instrument off, then on again.
